SO WHAT IS MY APPROACH TO WEIGHT-LOSS?
After years of trial and error, I’ve realized the BEST way to achieve long-term weight-loss is to shift the focus from LOSING WEIGHT to GAINING HEALTH. What I learned is that long term weight-loss is a side effect of a healthy body, and when we shift our focus to improving our health (rather than losing weight) everything changes.

The eat less + exercise more model is not the answer for most Women! Why? Because calories do not control the metabolism, hormones do. When we eat less and exercise more, hunger and cravings increase and energy decreases, both of which sabotage any weight-loss effort. A 2007 study (American Psychologist) showed that up to 66 percent of people who followed the eat less + exercise more model ended up significantly heavier than they were when they started, just two years later.

The reason I’m so passionate about sharing this revolutionary approach is because it is VERY LIKELY that you (like most of my clients) have only been taught about 30 percent of what it takes to work WITH your body to achieve your goals, improve your health and lose weight. Today, I want to teach you about the other 70 percent.

The science behind mindset: Unconscious emotions and limiting beliefs sabotage weight-loss and health efforts.
You may be wondering what mindset has to do with achieving your weight-loss and health goals?

Everything!

According to Dr. Joe Dispenza, brain scientist and author of “Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself”, unconscious limiting beliefs and emotions significantly influence a person’s ability to lose weight and improve health- maybe even more so than diet and exercise. In fact, you can be “doing everything right” on a physical level (eating right, exercising, etc.), but if your mindset and emotional health are suffering, achieving those goals can be virtually impossible.

One of the main reasons New Year’s resolutions fail is because people try to solve their problems with the SAME consciousness (thoughts and beliefs) that created them. Doing the same thing and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.

Why detox?
One of the fastest ways to gain health and lose weight is to lower inflammation, purge toxins and jump start the liver (which regulates the metabolism).

Toxins are everywhere. They fill the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. When waste builds up, we get sick. The liver performs the majority of detoxification and prevents toxin accumulation. If the liver, which regulates the metabolism, is bogged down by toxic burden, it doesn’t have the time or energy to keep the body healthy and free of toxins.

To shed fat, toxins must first be mobilized (the missing link for most) and removed. Proper detoxification often results in increased energy, fewer cravings, weight loss, improved sleep, a more flexible and faster metabolism, healthier hormones, clearer skin, a stronger immune system, and an elevated sense of well-being.

Fuel your body in a way that improves your health, nourishes your body, balances blood sugar & hormones, decreases cravings, and is satisfying and sustainable.
Food is so much more than food. In fact, WHAT we eat directly influences our state of mind; WHO we are; and HOW we think, act, and feel. Everything we put in our mouths either feeds or fights disease. Eating well is one of the most powerful forms of self-respect.

Question: what is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word DIET?

Hungry? Starving? Miserable? Failure?

I hear you.
This is another reason WHY most diets fail and why the conventional approach to weight-loss (too much restriction) is often what causes weight gain (over-eating).
Restricting calories, depriving yourself, eating low fat foods, and obsessing about every single calorie can lead to an unhealthy restrict-binge cycle, and an overly stressed body.
Conventional weight-loss programs trigger the “fight or flight” response. Following a low-calorie diet or the “exercise more, eat less” approach does not lead to a flexible and balanced metabolism, in fact, causes the opposite: a broken metabolism, Increased hunger, cravings, hormone imbalances, and unstable energy levels.

Weight-loss is nearly impossible when your body is stuck in survival mode.
To achieve long term weight loss, we must understand hormones.
Hormones are the chemical messengers that signal the body whether to store fat or burn it, feel full or feel hungry and tell you whether you have balanced energy levels or no energy at all. The main hormones that influence hunger are ghrelin, cortisol, dopamine, and serotonin. Stress highjacks ALL of them and can sabotage your best efforts. So, you are probably wondering how we work WITH the body (and hormones) instead of constantly fighting against them?
The short answer: EAT BETTER, NOT LESS.
Does this mean you can eat 4,000 calories of nut butter and avocado and still lose weight? No.

To lose weight, the body must be in a very slight caloric deficit. But, when we eat foods that nourish the body, balance blood sugar, balance hunger hormones, and address nutrient deficiencies, hunger and cravings are no longer an issue.
If you’ve tried to lose weight in the past and felt hungry all the time, this simply means that your body was not able to use fat for fuel (you're lacking “metabolic flexibility,” also known as a broken metabolism), you weren’t eating enough nutrients, or you weren’t eating the right foods and macronutrients.
My approach focuses on consuming whole foods, packed with fiber and nutrients that help to lower inflammation, balance blood sugar, curb cravings and boost energy. Eating whole foods does not mean that you must give up your favorite meals. It just means we must tweak them.
For example, it is possible to achieve your weight-loss and health goals and still enjoy meals like spaghetti, burgers, tacos, pizza, chili, stir-fry, and the occasional treat too. Welcome to my world! These “tweaks” will blow your mind and change the way you eat forever.

PILLAR #4: MOVEMENT
Discover your fitness “Goldilocks” (not too much or too little exercise) and learn WHY the way you’ve been approaching exercise is sabotaging your weight-loss and health efforts.
Three reasons why the traditional approach to exercise fails:
  • Over exercising (most common)
  • Under exercising
  • Wrong type of exercise and/or injury.
This is why as holistic personal trainer, I am more concerned about how your body and hormones respond to exercise (stress) because I understand the importance of working WITH the body (and hormones), not against it/them.

I also recognize the importance of injury prevention, which is why my exercise programs are focused on joint health, learning proper form and good movement patterns, focusing on alignment, and improving posture.

Yeah? You can throw it ALL out! It’s junk!

Enter the “paradox of rest.” Performance, or in this case- health, is only as good as our ability to recover. If you look at Olympic athletes, they take recovery just as serious as they take their training.
The model of peak performance and transforming health is:
Stress (purposeful) + rest = growth (results)
Stress without proper rest and recovery will lead to regression. Overtraining is ONE of the most common causes of stress overload, which results in weight-gain and poor health. When rest and recovery are not a priority this can lead to an injured and overly stressed body, both of which make a “healthy lifestyle” and weight-loss nearly impossible.
Your results are only as good as your recovery.
Science has proven that too much exercise and the wrong type of exercise often leads to chronically high cortisol levels. Cortisol signals the body to store fat and leaves the body in a catabolic state (a state that is constantly breaking down).

My approach includes four of the most powerful recovery tools, fasting, breathing, sleep-optimization, and decreasing EMF (electromagnetic field) exposure.
Chronic stress is an epidemic and most of the population spends a majority of waking hours in a sympathetic state. The body cannot repair itself when it’s in a constant state of “fight or flight.
FASTING is one of the fastest and most effective ways to lower inflammation (the gateway to all disease), improve recovery, and heal the body. When we stop eating for a period, this allows the energy, which is normally used for digestion, to be used for cellular repair. This repair process is called “auto-phagey”, which means “self-eating”. Auto-phagey is the method by which the body gets rid of damaged and diseased cells, pre-cancerous cells, inflammatory cytokines, and toxins, which allows the body to regenerate new, healthier cells.
Breathing effectively lowers cortisol, slows breathing, slows brain waves, lowers blood pressure, and signals the body to move into a “rest and repair” parasympathetic mode.
Quality sleep plays a vital role in our ability to recover. During deep sleep, the body enters detox and repair mode. Deep sleep is 100 percent necessary for optimal health. Poor sleep leads to cravings, weight gain, a compromised immune system, poor brain function, and memory problems!

BOTTOM LINE: you can eat kale, exercise, and drink green juice, but if you’re not sleeping well, your body is not repairing itself and is under loads of stress.
Sleep is hands-down one of the most powerful healing tools.
Decreasing EMF is one of the most underrated and overlooked aspects of improving one’s health. EMF exposure increases inflammation, compromises cellular communication, alters gene expression (damages DNA), and impedes many other essential biological functions in the body. Decreasing EMF exposure has a profound effect on our brain, body, and nervous system.

Can I start the program on my own time?

How much time per day should I plan on dedicating to NEW YOU?
I estimate approximately 30-45 minutes per day max. Plus the time allotted for the 30min workouts (3 x per week).
